METAMORPHOSIS

[ met·a·mor·pho·sis ]

About: This NEW art print is a reminder of how incredible, resilient, and mysterious nature is. And let’s not forget that we are a product of this resilient, natural world as well. We may need to retreat within our shellves (see what I did there?) from time to time. We erect walls of self protection and distance ourselves from what is too painful to bear. We may feel like we are falling apart, as the world crumbles around us. But we can emerge again, stronger in the broken places. We were built for this.

Literally: A change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one, by natural or supernatural means, from an immature juvenile state to a mature adult state.

Physically: Within the protective shell of the chrysalis, a caterpillar’s body is melted down and reconstituted at a cellular level. In order to emerge as a Butterfly, the caterpillar undergoes a complete disassembly before rebuilding itself.

Symbolically: Many of us go through cycles of retreat, breakdown and rebuilding in our lives and in ourselves. But each time, we become more mature, more resilient and more beautiful. If you feel like you are falling apart, you are not broken. You are growing.

Listen: THIS is the episode of Radiolab that forever changed how I think about Butterflies and Metamorphosis. You can skip to time stamp 52:30 if you want to skip to the Butterfly section. I really hope that you give it a listen.
